Situated in The Castlegate, this traditional pub is steeped in the history of Aberdeen, with a myriad of fascinating facts surrounding the site, and indeed the city itself. Old Blackfriars puts you at the very heart of it all. The historic pub is the perfect antidote to the pumping music and jumping customers of the city’s style bars. Blackfriars (the ‘Old’ is never used by locals) is named after the order of monks who owned land on the nearby former Castlegate market as long ago as the 14th century. While the monks might not have approved of drinking, they may well have been grateful for the relative modesty of the establishment named after them. Split over two levels and with some stunning stained glass, Blackfriars attracts a mixed but mellow crowd, who appreciate cask ales, fine wines and home made pub grub. There are a great selection of 9 cask conditioned ales, with regular guest ales on tap. Guinness, Stella, Staropramen, Tennents, Best and Strongbow are also on tap, for the less adventurous drinker. The pub is the regular recipient of prestigious awards, including the 2007 Pub of the Year from the Campaign for Real Ales Association, a title Old Blackfriars has claimed four times in the last ten years. The delicious and varied menu includes a selection of wholesome mainstays such as haggis neeps n’ tatties, traditional fish & chips, and steaks. Daily specials feature such dishes as chicken and smokey bacon pasta or curries. Healthier options include a range of crisp salads. Service is swift and friendly, and the welcoming atmosphere ensures Old Blackfriars’ success year in, year out. Punters keep on coming back to this place for the warm, homely atmosphere, encouraged, not least, by the huge roaring fire. Also, come down on the first Tuesday of every month for the chance to win a £50 voucher for first prize in their quiz night.
