The Belmont Picturehouse is the North East’s premiere venue for arthouse, foreign, classic and quality mainstream cinema. Since opening in 2000, the three screen independent cinema has been providing the people of the North East with a wider variety of cinema choice than had ever been available in the city. Equipped with the latest sound systems, digital projection technology and comfortable seating, The Belmont is a modern yet accessible alternative to the multiplex experience. Strong mainstream titles are shown alongside popular foreign films, limited-release and more esoteric films, as well as remastered classics and repertory screenings. Special seasons include the annual French and Spanish Film Festivals, and events featuring Q&As with film directors or screen-writers. This blend of crowd-pleasing blockbusters alongside obscure foreign films combines to make the Belmont an extravagant success with film-lovers. The fully licensed café bar plays host to live music and a regular quiz, as well as providing a space for local art exhibitions, not to mention wine and film evenings. Adult and schools education programmes provide outreach to the local community, and there are regular courses on film studies, from introductory levels upwards. There’s something for everyone; Silver Screen showings for senior citizens, a Saturday morning Kid’s Club with films and activities, even Big Scream parent, baby screenings and also autism friendly screenings. The digital projection facilities allow the Belmont to screen live opera from the Met, and Q&As with top film directors promoting their work. The Belmont offers everything sought by the discerning filmgoer, and with an atmosphere that’s welcoming to all, looks set to continue with its popularity.
