Situated close to Glasgow’s Queen Street station, Waxy O’Connor’s is a well-established bar and restaurant that’s built up a loyal following over the years. It’s the sort of place that’s as suited to a leisurely lunch as it is to post-work drinks on a Friday night. Bustling and characterful, the capacious pub is deceptively large. In total, you’ll find six bars split across three levels. If you’re seeking a quiet nook, you’ll find one in here somewhere, a spot where you can eat and drink in peace. Billing itself as Glasgow’s biggest and best Irish pub, Waxy O’Connor’s certainly fills up fast on weekends, while on holidays such as St Patrick’s day it’s stowed out the door. Most of the time though you should have no trouble finding a table and getting comfortable in the West George Street pub. A well stocked bar includes a fine selection of Scottish and Irish whiskies, while hearty pub grub is served all through the day. Dishes like fish and chips served with mushy peas might be familiar, but they’re also fresh, cooked to order and full of flavour. Waxy’s 80z rib eye steak burger, served with chunky chips, is a particular highlight. Fans of live music will find that Waxy’s is playing their jam, for there’s often a solo artist or band performing live in the evenings, while the rest of the time the jukebox keeps the tunes coming. Waxy’sDundas Bar is where you’ll want to order your pint to enjoy an unimpeded view of the live music. Due to the big screens scattered throughout the pub, Waxy’s is also ideal for big events, be it the boxing, the rugby or the football. With nine rooms in all, linked by a series of hallways and staircases, Waxy O’Connor’s is easy to enter and harder to leave. Once the drinks arrive and the chat start flowing though you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
