Once upon a time, the pub that stood at 180 Leith Walk was famous for one thing: Trainspotting. The Volley, reputed haunt of Begbie and pals, may be no more, but in its place The Cask & Still has arisen. The bar has earned praise for its gin, whisky and beer, with craft ales and bitters a speciality. The taps gleam, the lights glow softly and the pub resonates to the chatter of locals and the chink of glasses. While quiet enough during the day, the bar fills up quickly as night falls and Leith’s professionals come out to play. Sports are shown on the large screen, there’s a popular pub quiz and an inventive cocktail menu to agonise over. Pubs that try to appeal to everyone can run the risk of appealing to no one. Thankfully, The Cask & Still has surmounted this hurdle, with enough pub staples to woo the traditionalists, but sufficient flourishes to entice sophisticated drinkers who like to know the provenance of their gin. The bar’s tasting room, situated at the back, can be hired for free, and is ideal for events or private parties. As its name would suggest, the tasting room also hosts wine tastings, often complemented by sushi and other nibbles. Finally, when it comes to food, The Cask’s no-nonsense approach sees it do a roaring trade in nachos, hot dogs and pies.
