Il Castello Restaurant was established in 1989 by Nicky Polcino and Jackie Waller who where the brains behind Edinburgh’s very first Italian Restaurant, The Sorrento. Nicky went on to open several restaurants throughout Edinburgh including the 5 – star Vito’s Restaurant who garnered a reputation for being one of the UK’s best Italian restaurants. From Il Castello’s opening until his passing in 2015, the restaurant was run by Giuseppe Votta, who was well-known and respected in the Edinburgh community.
Nowadays the restaurant has come full circle and is now operated by Nicky and Jackie’s son Cosimo, who has great plans for Il Castello working alongside, is head chef Elaina Fernandez and her talented team of chefs. Elaina will soon be undertaking the Master Chef Certificate, meaning a Michelin star will be possible for the restaurant.
Cosimo has brought a wealth of experience to Il Castello particularly from Kenya Malindi, where he ran the largest holiday resort on the coast of the Indian Ocean. He also has brought with him a great deal of knowledge and expertise regarding Italian seafood which is now featured heavily on Il Castello’s menu. Cosimo welcomes all to come and join him for an Italian feast in Il Castello Restaurant.
Situated within gazing distance of the famous castle it’s named after, Il Castello is an authentic Italian restaurant where local meets cosmopolitan. It’s something of an institution around these parts, as much a fixture of the local area as the castle that gazes down imperiously from its adjacent perch. An unassuming grey and white exterior belies a cosy interior that’s warm and surprisingly spacious. This ristoranteItaliano is the real deal, as the many Mediterranean tourists who frequent it will attest, each searching for an authentic taste of home. The Scots are equally enamoured with Il Castello of course, for Italian food has long been subsumed into the nation’s cuisine. Prized for its friendly staff as much as for its light and crispy pizzas, Il Castello regularly updates its menu to incorporate seasonal specials that allow its chefs’ flair to flourish. Try a mixture of mussels, stuffed mushrooms and calamari to start before gravitating to the escalope of veal with cannelloni. This is comfort food, sensibly priced and artfully plated. It’s good food, that’s what it is.
