Provand’s Lordship is in good nick for a building that’s well over 500 years old. Built in 1471 as part of a hospital in the city’s cathedral precinct, it endures as a remnant of a bygone era. Immaculately preserved, the so-called Auld Hoose is home to an impressive collection of 17th-century furniture gifted by the eminent Sir William Burrell, as well as a series of impressive royal portraits. Visitors will get a terrific insight into household decor spanning the centuries, including old bureaus and kitchen utensils. You must, however, mind your head: with its low ceilings, flagstone floors and narrow doorways, the house at times has the feel of a hobbit’s residence. As you venture out of the historic building, make time to tour the St Nicholas Garden behind the house, which has been expertly recreated to resemble gardens of the 15th century.
