The Entertainment Guide

The Orkney Brewery

The Orkney Brewery is located in what used to be a Victorian Schoolhouse, so it’s an appropriate place to learn about the history of the making of beer, especially on the family-friendly tours where young visitors have the opportunity to dress up like 19th century school children. Plenty is available to keep the kids happy at The Orkney Brewery with many aspects of the attraction tailored to maintain their interest. The tours also involve the kind of in-depth knowledge you’d expect from a brewery about the craft and processes and of course features the all-important tasting session at the end in which you enjoy copious samples. Afterwards you can browse the Brewery shop for some take-home treats and if all that supping has made you peckish, enjoy the tasty local speciality food (and more ale) in the Tasting Hall. The menu is varied and has an emphasis on Orkney produce as well as a choice of children’s dishes, but if you’re just in the mood for a sweet snack, you won’t be disappointed by the Dragonhead cake.

We stayed at the cottages, literally a two minute walk away from the brewery and we became rather well acquainted with the place. The old part of the building used to be a school and the brewery have kept the memory of this in their Tasting Room. The tables throughout the bar/restaurant/tasting area are old school desks and there are photos of the school and some of it's pupils on the wall. During our stay we took one of the tours. It made a nice change to doing a whisky distillery tour. At the end you receive three tasters of whichever is on tap. It's a great way to see which you would prefer. For me, I enjoyed the Corn Crake. A nice light ale. We had also decided that we would eat at the brewery. I had a burger and it was really tasty. The staff were all really friendly and welcoming.
