The Trades House is an iconic pub in Dundee. It is patronised by Dundonians of every stripe and persuasion, from professionals to students from the nearby University, amongst whom it is known as the perfect place to grab lunch, a cracking pub to watch big screen sport or grab an evening pint, as well as the meeting place for a big night out. This is due partly to the friendly, welcoming nature of the place, and partly to the stunning decor. A former bank building, the Trades House is all crown mouldings, plaster medallions, oak-tiled floors, ornate cornicing, granite tables and gargoyles. Large stained glass windows depict traditional trades, hence the name. Essentially it’s one large rectangular room with the corners gated off into "snugs" for diners and the centre left open for drinkers, the large space being paradoxically cosy, thanks to the number of snugs. It can get raucous when sports fans crowd in to watch football and rugby on Sky Sports on the three large screens. Those looking for a more relaxing time can lunch till 3PM Monday to Saturday, and until 6 on Sundays. The everchanging menu is pub grub of the highest order, featuring five specials a week, with fish, roast beef or steak pie, chicken New York or Balmoral, and curries from Jalfrezi to Madras. You can sample one of the biggest ranges of draught beers in Scotland, with eighteen lagers and ten beers to choose from, including such classy European brews as Erdinger, Hoegaarden and Furstenburg, while real ale buffs can sample the Deuchars. Spirits include premium gins and vodkas in 35 ml shots, and the wine list’s rather good as well. The incredibly efficient staff deliver a mind-boggling range of beers and lagers in surroundings which are as welcoming as they are impressive.
