The Cameo Bar is something of a de facto choice for lovers of beer, food and sport in Leith. Located on Commercial St, close to the shore, the bar is a favourite of local office workers and young professisonals, including a contingent of the Scottish Executive who can be found here enjoying an after work drink (or several). The interior is eclectic in the extreme, with a huge bronze statue of an angel greeting you as soon as you enter, and stainless steel hand prints on the doors. There is a touch of the contemporary (the beige suede benches); there is a little Edwardian (the red and brown flock wallpaper), and some traditional pub (dark wood, gilt mirrors and velvet curtains). This shouldn’t work, but strangely, and charmingly, it does. The back-room makes a good informal dining room, but also hosts the Cameo’s television projector screen when the football is on (all major games are shown on Sky and Setanta.). A myriad of smaller plasma screens in the Cameo ensure the football is visible throughout the bar, which can get very busy on big sports nights. A range of beers is on tap to fuel the fun, including Staropramen, Heineken & Pilsner. Wine drinkers can investigate the Wine of the Season offer. Much more sedate during the day, you might want to come and sample the pub grub, including burgers with a choice of topping, fish and chips and chicken Balmoral, spitroasted chickens with a choice of sauces. Light bites include duck spicy rolls or chicken skewers. And for dessert you can have bannoffie pie, or the ubiquitous sticky toffee pudding. There is a weekday two meals for £9.99 offer you can take advantage of. And the Sunday Quiz is always fun, with £30 of drinks/food tokens up for grabs. The Cameo Bar is full of quirks and character, both in it’s decor and its clientele.
