Edinburgh is full of French or fusion restaurants, but we Brits have our own culinary heritage. Monster Mash goes back to basics by celebrating traditional British cuisine, and is a monsterous success! This place is packed with students, office workers, anyone who loves homecooked comfort food. The style is retro, from the Beanos in the magazine racks to the tomato-shaped ketchup holders. The menu has Steak Pie or Fish and Chips, but Bangers n’ Mash are the main attraction. There are 7 top flight sausages from local butchers, with vegetarian and vegan options; you choose your gravy, then your mash, plain, mustard or champ. Puddings include such school dinner staples as apple crumble or Knickerbocker Glory; they didn’t taste this good at school! You can have two courses for around a tenner, and you get a retro sweetie on your way out. You don’t get that anywhere with a Michelin star.
