Situated behind Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, the old Victorian fruit and vegetable market was redesigned in 1993 and is the leading contemporary arts space in Scotland. The original Fruitmarket was erected in 1936, and it now retains its architectural history whilst engaging tourists and visitors alike with high quality contemporary art.

The Fruitmarket Gallery’s focus is on world–class art, presenting exhibitions of world-class, thought-provoking and challenging art made by both Scottish and International artists in an environment that is welcoming, engaging, informative and always free. Every summer the Gallery is part of the Edinburgh Art Festival and Summer 2010 sees Turner Prize winner Martin Creed’s work being showcased. Creed’s exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery will mix new and existing work, never before seen in Scotland. Information Assistants are on hand in the gallery to provide tours and offer insights to the artists work. An innovative array of educational events is on offer, including youth workshops and over 60’s workshops in conjunction with current exhibitions, artists’ talks, seminars, writers’ talks, school residencies and community outreach projects. There is also an Education room, where short films for each exhibition are shown with interviews from the artists or curators. The café, open daily, offers superb freshly prepared dishes, and award-winning speciality coffees. Seasonal produce is the starting point, but visitors are guaranteed variety in dishes throughout the year. Home to Scotland’s leading contemporary culture bookshop, the Gallery stocks visually stunning children’s books and books on film, photography, fashion and gifts including artist’s monographs continuing the gallery’s emphasis on education.
