Set on one of Edinburgh’s iconic old cobbled streets beside the Grassmarket, Maxies Bistro & Wine Bar is a treasure. The food is classic French bistro style with a Scottish twist, and simple in presentation, and strong on flavours. Maxies is most appealing during the festival months where customers can relax and have a bottle of Edinburgh’s famous Innis Gunn whilst overlooking the castle and town from the terrace. Alternatively, on cold winter days Maxies’ interior is a snug tavern, full of beautifully embroidered cushions to lay back into and relax. An Edinburgh institution for more than 30 years, this family run restaurant has stood the test of time by ignoring food fads and giving its customers what they want. Its prime location just off the Royal Mile attracts a steady stream of tourists and locals who are lured downstairs to fill the nooks and crannies of the cosy, lived-in dining area. Scattered cushions and candles in wine bottles enhance the cosy atmosphere, and staff, under the directorship of owners Norman and Lynn MacLeod could not be more welcoming. The menu is wide-ranging with soups, salads, pasta, seafood platters, stir-fries, enchiladas and steak as well as daily specials. For starters you could sample the Warm Duck & Mango Salad served with a Smoked Hickory dressing, or the Moules Marinieres. Mains include Breast of Chicken with a Cream & Oyster Mushroom sauce, Duck with a rich Grand Marnier Sauce, or try the hot seafood platter. There is also an extensive range of vegetarian options for the non carnivorous. The desserts menu will have you casting any thoughts of dieting to the winds. It’s well worth venturing out, summer or winter (the bistro stock comfy blankets), on to the rooftop terrace with a coffee or glass of wine to enjoy the panoramic views of the Old Town.
