Paperino's - Byres Road
After Paperino's success on Sauchiehall Street, owners Stefano and Sandro Giovanazzi opened another restaurant in the West End. The Byres Road branch looks similar, with a more modern ambience, and seating for 180 in the spacious interior. Red booths and colourful prints enliven the place, lit by natural light from the floor to ceiling windows. You can people watch in Byres Road at the front, or enjoy a relaxing view of Ruthven Lane at the back. The restaurant prides itself on being child-friendly, with high chairs and a baby changing room, earning it a place on the shortlist for 'Family Outlet of the Year' by the Scottish Licensing Trade. Certainly the night I visited there were plenty of families enjoying themselves. The children's menu is priced at £5.30,and is as fresh as the adult menu, so no frozen chicken nuggets here. The a la carte menu offers a wide variety of pastas, fish, pizzas and meats. Everything is freshly made to order, and you can certainly taste the freshness in the garlic bruschetta. Most amazing was how quickly the starter arrived, considering that the restaurant was packed. A tagliatelle carbonara came in a rich creamy sauce, with generous, flavoursome chunks of meat. I understand breakfast is equally good, and served from 8.30 am to 12noon. If you don't have time to dine you canorder food from the takeaway window, 'Paperino's To Go', which is open from 8.00am (4pm on a Sunday) to 10.45pm. This offers anything from thea la carte menu as well as snacks, such as paninis and bagels. If youdo have time to dine, and party, the mezzanine is available for hire. The spaciousness and location of the restaurant make it a popular choice for office parties as well as families.
