With prime locations in Glasgow’s St Vincent Place and Cresswell Lane, traditional Spanish décor and authentic food, Café Andaluz’s success was always inevitable, but the level of popularity it has attained has surpassed even the most optimistic of expectations. Even on Monday nights the restaurants buzz with the animated chat of contented diners and the patient tones of the attractive, friendly staff, who take time to advise newcomers on the intricacies of Tapas-style eating.  The menu is innovative and fairly extensive. From the Tapas Vegetarians section there’s a delicious Pan de Berehenas (A fine puree of aubergine drizzled with olive oil served with toasted bread) and the moreish Champinones (grilled mushrooms coated in a light cream ‘Malaga Dulce’ sweet wine & garlic sauce). From the meat and seafood section, there are delights such as the Pato Ahumado con Amontillado (smoked duck breast with a sweet sherry and pear compote), and the gloriously rustic Chorizo Frito al Vino (Spicy chorizo sausage sautéed with sweet red onions in red wine). Pollo Rebozado con Miel features tender chicken fillet in a crisp batter coated with Spanish honey and grain mustard. But it’s not all Tapas-sized portions. There’s also a wide range of Paella, and a specials section featuring a range of inventive, freshly cooked Iberian delicacies, all complemented by an extensive wine list that features a fair proportion of Spanish standouts. Café Andaluz’s continued success is likely due (apart from the exquisite food) to the social aspect of Tapas-style eating, with tables of gratified diners exhibiting clear delight in sharing a wide selection of Spanish dishes, and given the restaurants’ warm, vibrant setting and consistently full tables, it’s not surprising that so many restaurants are adopting the Tapas-style format.
