Croma
Croma is well-known amongst Mancunian lovers of Italian food as the best pizzeria in the city. This restaurant goes well beyond your standard Pizza Hut, though, as its reputation extends well beyond the city, having been listed in the Times guide for Top Ten Pizza restaurants in the UK again. You can guess this as soon as you enter. Italian designer Enzo Apicella’s interior is sleek, minimalist, spick and span and open plan. Set over three floors the high ceiling lets in lots of natural light, making it a million miles from the homely clutter of your traditional trattoria. The atmosphere, however, is relaxed and vibey, friendly, always busy but never rushed, as are the staff. The pizza menu features such traditional mainstays as the margherita and fiorentina, but made properly. All bases are freshly and perfectly made, not the slightest bit doughy, but not so thin that they crunch with every bite either, with perfectly crisped and slightly puffed edges. The more adventurous can try such innovative pizzas as tandoori chicken or Peking duck, which are popular with the clientele. There is also a good pasta and salad menu, offering such treats as crispy aromatic duck or Caesar salad (which you can also sample on a pizza if you fancy). The kids menu doubles as a handy colouring in sheet (crayons provided) so kids can doodle while they decide whether to have penne pasta or a small margherita with ice cream for £4.95. The wine list is as long as the food menu, and equally good value.
