The Ox

The Ox boldly bills itself as ‘the best steak and cocktail restaurant in Bristol’, but you’d be hard pressed to dispute the claim – especially as it’s been backed up by two Bristol Good Food awards. Located in a basement beneath The Commercial Rooms in the Old City, the restaurant – which opened in 2013 – is both characterful and unpretentious. Carnivores are given the choice of several tempting dishes, with most of the meat coming from local butchers Buxton of Winterbourne. Test the restaurant’s claim and order a steak, which is sure to arrive on your plate branded with the neat footprint of a Josper grill and served with a creamy green peppercorn sauce. Enjoy your dish with a nice glass of red chosen from the thoughtfully compiled wine list, or – if you’re dining on a select weekday evening that is BYO – uncork your favourite tipple. If steak isn’t your thing, fear not – there’s a broad selection of stunning small plates, tasty charcuterie and mouthwatering sides. The seared fillet of Cornish cod with bacon and lemon-fried potato is also heavenly. If attentive service and superb cuisine at affordable prices float your boat, The Ox is where it’s at.

Really impressed with the At Home Steak Kit! Great service being offered during lockdown! Bought as a gift and both my parents loved it! The steaks were amazing and huge!! Lovely complimentary dessert too! Would definitely recommend The Ox! Thank you again!

Faultless tasting steak, however they only do a 6oz fillet. Having a wider selection would warrant 5* The rib starters were fantastic and the house wine very reasonable and tasty. Service was great. Would definitely recommend.
