Gamba

“The best seafood restaurant in Glasgow” is how Gamba boldly describes itself. It’s a brave statement to make in the midst of some very strong competition, but a credible one too. The recipient of numerous culinary awards, Gamba can boast of being Seafish and Caterer UK Seafood Restaurant of the Year 2015 and the holder of two AA rosettes. The seafood is so fresh it tastes like it’s just been plucked out of the ocean (spoiler: it has), while the decor is equally impressive. The modern restaurant features elegant lighting and a maritime mural that, like Gamba’s large white dinner plates, is generously stocked with fruits of the sea. Scallops, monkfish, halibut and cod are all lightly cooked to bring out their natural flavours and paired with an inspired choice of vegetables and spices. Chef and proprietor Derek Marshall takes a real pride in his work, with an attention to detail that ensures every plate is a miniature work of art. The presentation is superb, but this isn’t food for looking at – it’s for feasting upon and polishing off, right down to the last morsel. The seasonal menu highlights the provenance of all its seafood, much of which is sourced in Scottish waters. Start your meal with half a dozen oysters or a fish soup made with Portland crabmeat and prawn dumplings before agonising over half a dozen appetising mains. Crisp-fried line caught sea bass is accompanied by watermelon and goat’s cheese; roast hake is paired with creamed leeks and peat-smoked haddock. Every mouthful melts. Every mouthful leaves a lasting impression. Finish proceedings with a white chocolate parfait or warm cherry bakewell with cherry sorbet. Glasgow’s best seafood restaurant? You’d better believe the hype.

Our first visit, was a birthday treat. I had heard of the famous fish soup, but not a lover of fish soup - how wrong was I, it’s amazingly delicious. We had a lovely, relaxed lunch. Every dish hot, right size, tasty. Our daughter in law enjoyed the vegetarian option. Look forward to returning. I now have the recipe for the Fish Soup, but doubt it will taste the same.

Probably my favourite Glasgow eaterie. The service is genuinely impeccable and i've never been disappointed by anything on the menu. If you love fish you'll love Gamba. As an aside... beautiful stained glass too and lovely artwork.
