Formerly a boarding school, the medieval Dunrobin Castle, 50 miles north of Inverness in Golspie, is open to the public between April and October. Easily accessible by either car or coach, the castle offers self-guided tours of the elegant interior, museum and the expansive castle gardens. The museum features trophy animals hunted on safari by the Sutherland family on safari, as well as ethnographic and archaeological artefacts. Be sure not to miss the amazing falconry displays, which take place in the gardens twice a day. Staff are more than happy to answer questions about the castle’s history at any point along the way. The Tea Room offers both hot meals and snacks, and a gift shop has Scottish hand-crafted souvenirs available for purchase. With a whopping 189 rooms, it’s the largest castle in the Northern Highlands, and a picturesque family-friendly site worth stopping for on any Highlands trip.
