Located in a humble and unassuming brick building, the Bonhoga Gallery (which means “my spiritual home” in the Shetland dialect) in Weisdale Mill is home to a variety of intriguing exhibitions for art lovers. Formerly used as a meal and barley mill and then turned into a butchery and tannery in the early 1900s, it fell into ruin until the middle of the 20th century. After extensive renovations, it took on its new role as an art gallery, opening in 1994. It organises seven exhibitions a year in the Upper Gallery, focusing on modern visual art from both local and international artists. The current exhibition is called Behind the North Wind and displays work from three Nordic artists, focusing on their kinship to the aesthetics of the joys of life in the frigid north. Previous exhibitions included photography of Scottish fishing communities and a spotlight on children’s artwork. The downstairs gallery presents work from Shetland and other UK-based artists. Owned by Shetland Arts, the gallery also contains a cafe, gift shop, and offers free wifi to visitors.
