Thanks to the £200 million redevelopment of Dundee’s quayside, waterfront properties are set to become very desirable indeed. Number 57, on Dock Street, is one nightspot that stands to benefit from the revival as the city’s waterfront enjoys a long-overdue renaissance. As Dundee’s newest live music bar, 57 can be relied on to showcase the best up-and-coming local bands as well as touring rock, indie and folk artists. Step inside on any given night of the week and there’s usually a singer-songwriter running through a few acoustic numbers; pull up a seat at the bar and nod along while you sip a cold one. During the day, the bar does a roaring trade in express lunches and hot drinks, with the hot chocolate – served with cream, marshmallows and a handful of decorative M&Ms – highly recommended. When evening falls and it becomes socially acceptable to get stuck into the harder stuff, 57’s cocktails are well worth investigating: generous measures, shaken, crushed and stirred to perfection. By day the bar feels like a continental cafe; by night it’s a vibrant bar and diner, complete with a cool soundtrack.
