Delve into Highland history and ancient traditions at the Inverness Museum & Art Gallery. First opened to the public in 1826, the museum has since gained a reputation for housing one of the country’s most outstanding collections of Highland artefacts. The building itself, meanwhile, has benefited from several refurbishments since the present complex was constructed in 1963, incorporating a cafe in 1982 and several new galleries in 2007, which incidentally coincided with the Year of Highland Culture. Among the attractions are exhibitions on geology and natural history, a collection of Jacobite memorabilia and Highland bagpipes and a rich programme of lunchtime talks. Learn more about the Picts and their unique carved stones, as well as the vitality of the Gaelic language. The museum is also home to a dazzling Inverness silverware collection, and brings things full circle with a display on modern Inverness. When you’re ready for a hot beverage, the Cuach Coffee Shop is the ideal place to grab a latte and – oh, go on – a slice of cake, too. As well as arts and crafts, the museum plays host to events such a theatrical performances (in the main gallery) and even musical events, such as for National Chamber Music Day.
