ST NICHOLAS
CATHEDRAL
St Nicholas is the Cathedral for
the Church of England Diocese
of Newcastle, which stretches
from the River Tyne to the
River Tweed. Christian prayer
and worship are offered here
daily, just as they have been
on the site for over 900 years.
The Cathedral is the seat of
the Bishop of Newcastle and
as the “mother church” of the
Diocese, it exists to support
the Bishop’s mission, teaching
and pastoral ministry across
the diocese. The majestic
building is the focus for great
Diocesan celebrations and
civic services, as well as a
place of quiet serenity set amid
the busyness of a vibrant city.
Founded in 1091, the Norman
church that occupied the site
was destroyed by fire in 1216
before the current building was
completed in 1350. Its tower
is noted for its ornate 15th-
century lantern spire. Heavily
restored in 1777, the building
was raised to cathedral status
in 1882, when it became known
as the Cathedral Church of St
Nicholas. Whether you live
or work in Newcastle, or are
visiting from further afield, a
trip to St Nicholas Cathedral
will leave you feeling soothed
and inspired.
