Starks Kitchen is a Chillingham Road eatery of
some renown. Put it this way, it’s the sort of place
whose location doesn’t really matter, because
regulars will happily cross town to get to it. Were
Starks to relocate to a mountainside, odds are
that a band of devoted souls would still make the
pilgrimage there every week. Rather than trying to
be all the things to all the people, Starks Kitchen
has made a deliberate point of trying to limit itself,
both in terms of opening hours and in terms of
the size of the menu. That way, quality can be
focused on above all else and the restaurant’s
proprietors know that every dish that leaves the
kitchen is representative of their lofty standards
and attention to detail. Dining at Starks Kitchen
feels more like an event rather than a meal,
despite this restaurant being anything but formal.
The best word to describe the decor inside would
be white. It’s all very white, brilliantly so, which,
coupled with the clean and airy ambience, makes
for a neutral atmosphere, one in which the food
gets to take centre stage. And what food! It all
starts with brunch which is served between 11
and 3 Wednesday to Friday and from 10am on
weekends. Check the board for the latest specials
while you nibble on gordal pitted olives, spiced
nuts, Lindisfarne oysters and monkfish cheeks
with chilli jam. When you’re ready to order a large
plate, there’s the prospect of a gourmet all day
breakfast to look forward to as well as 35-day
aged rib eye steak. Burgers are a speciality here,
with Wednesday the night to arrive to savour
Starks’ unique take on the classic burger. From
buttermilk fried chicken to tempura battered soft
shell crab, Starks Kitchen does food like nowhere
else in Newcastle.
