Intu Eldon Square
Intu Eldon Square is truly the beating heart of retail
in the thriving city of Newcastle. This ultra-modern,
steel-and-glass shopping complex features a
dizzying list of over 150 High Street retail outlets
and specialist boutiques. Though originally opened
by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, the fully enclosed
two-storey complex has been revamped in recent
years. Reconstruction work began in earnest in mid-
2005 and has come to fruition in the best possible
way. Not only is the centre safe and spotless, but
the staff are friendly and the WiFi is super-fast
and reliable. Not only that, but Eldon Square is
easily reached via public transport: there’s both
a metro station and a bus station attached to the
complex. High-quality tenants at Intu include a four-
storey Debenhams, a three-storey Next, Fenwick,
Thomas Sabo, Body Shop, New Look, Sketchers,
John Lewis, Smiggle, Game, River Island, Topshop,
Boots and Marks & Spencer. Global brands such as
Apple, Adidas and Hollister are also visible, and you
can while the hours browsing the latest CDs and
DVDs in HMV. Visitors are spoiled for choice when
it comes to deciding where and what to eat or drink.
The centre’s sprawling dining quarter has expanded
in recent years, with a £25 million development
reaching completion in 2016. An exciting array of
cafés and restaurants are on-site, among them
TGI Fridays, Tapas Revolution, Chiquito, Costa
Coffee, Pizza Express, Starbucks, Nando’s, Strada
and Wagamama. The latest additions, meanwhile,
include American burger chain Smashburger, pizza
joint Inferno and Taiwanese bubble tea brand
Chatime. Grab some lunch or dinner before or after
your raid on the shops. Word of warning: Eldon
Square can get pretty busy at the weekends so
plan accordingly.
