ROYAL DEESIDE
RAILWAY
Set in the beautiful scenery
running alongside the peaceful
River Dee, the Royal Deeside
Railway offers a one-mile-long
journey on a standard gauge
steam and diesel train. The
original railway was opened in
1853, and regularly patronised
by the Royal family en route
to their home at Balmoral
Castle. Today, only a mile of
track can be frequented, but
there are plans to gradually
extend the original route until it
reaches Banchory. The journey
from the station at Milton of
Crathes lasts between 15 and
20 minutes, throughout which
you’ll admire stunning views
of the Dee Valley from the
train. At the visitor centre you’ll
find a fascinating exhibition
which details the history of
the track and its importance
to local people. There’s also
a railway carriage tearoom for
refreshments. Pick up an ice
cream and sit on one of their
picnic tables, or peruse their
craft shops and art galleries
before heading home. Coaches
are available to hire for
children’s birthday parties and
celebrations, and you can even
have a go at driving yourself for
an additional fee.
