GLEN GARIOCH
DISTILLERY
Founded way back in 1797,
Glen Garioch Distillery is one
of Scotland’s oldest distilleries.
Located in the historic Valley of
the Garioch (17 miles northwest
of Aberdeen), the building is
open to the public, and daily
tours get underway from 11am
Monday-Saturday, and 1pm on
Sunday. Drink in the rich history
of the distillery and the quaint
market town of Oldmeldrum,
then enjoy a smooth dram while
learning of the vast range of
single malt whiskies produced
at Glen Garioch (pronounced
‘Geery’ apparently). VIP tours
and group visits can also be
arranged in advance, with
admission reasonably priced
for the one-hour excursion.
After being educated about the
storied history of the distillery,
take a walk around the visitor
centre and browse an array
of products and memorabilia
in the gift shop, which has
some charming wares that
are sure to tempt the tourists.
The distillery also runs whisky
masterclasses,
for
those
wishing to learn their single
malts and to appreciate what
separates a good whisky from
a truly great one. Steeped in
history, Glen Garioch Distillery
is a haven not just for whisky
drinkers, but for anyone
fascinated by Scottish history
and heritage.
