Hobo’s is a colourful secondhand store selling
retro fashion items and accessories from the
1950s to the present. The independent vintage
store specialises in ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s clothing
and accessories of all kinds. It also stocks Casio
watches, Lomo cameras and small gifts along
with POP clothing, mugs, flight bags, magnets
and much more. Hobo’s was established in 1991,
but only came to Cardiff in 1994. It’s been going
strong ever since. As you might imagine, Hobo’s is
popular with the student community; it’s possible
to pick up a whole new outfit for around £35 in
the shop, which is what you might pay for a single
shirt in the likes of Topshop, so it’s certainly a good
alternative for anyone feeling the pinch. Hobo’s
fits the trend for all things vintage right now, even
if it was established long before such accessories
became en vogue all over again. Don’t expect
to find pretty teacups and 50s cocktail dresses
in Hobo’s however – it’s a much more down and
dirty version of vintage, where you might find 70s
teapots rather than dainty little china teacups.
It’s the sort of place you can step inside and lose
yourself in as you browse shelf upon shelf laden
to the point of groaning with unusual wares of all
kinds, from clothing to home furnishings. Adidas
striped tees, floral print handbags, denim hotpants,
baseball caps, bumbags and smocks are just
some of the items crying out for attention within
Hobo’s bustling emporium. Items range from cool
to kitsch and from camp to outrageous, including
70s shirts that it takes a brave man to wear. One
thing’s for sure: if you’re tired of having your style
stolen by others, pick up an outfit in Hobo’s and
you can rest safe in the knowledge that your one-
of-a-kind look will be virtually impossible to copy.
