Liverpool-2020-2021 - page 6

he city of Liverpool means different things to different people. The birthplace of
British guitar music. The embodiment of Northern soul and grit. The onramp for
the Irish diaspora who’ve left their mark on British culture since emigrating in
their droves in the 19th century. From the distant past to the recent past, Liverpool
is a colourful and charismatic city that is as prized for its contemporary delights
as it is for the history that seeps from the pores of its red brick warehouses and converted
factories.
The city is as famous for its people – for their indomitable spirit and character – as it is for the
ebb and flow of the tides that wash against the docks at Bootle. Few English cities can boast
a solidarity and sense of community like Liverpool, voted the fourth-friendliest city in the
world. It’s the city of culture. The city of music. The city of art and food and sport. Many of the
first-time visitors who flock to Liverpool do so to pay homage to its most famous export – The
Beatles. The Magical Mystery Tour, which takes in the childhood homes and hangouts of the
‘60s sensations, makes for an enthralling two-hour experience that’s rich in nostalgia.
Yet for all that, Liverpool is no more stuck in the 1960s than it is in the 1860s, when ships from
around the globe would converge to offload salt, cotton, ceramics and timber. The city may be
proud of its past but it’s one that has its sights firmly set on the future. Forward-thinking and
ambitious, Liverpool is a bustling 21st century hub whose nightlife is as alluring
as its business and leisure facilities. If you’re nursing the sort of thirst
that water alone can’t slake, head to St Peter’s Square, where the
pubs and clubs wind all the way to Concert Square, the hub that
anchors the city’s vibrant nightlife.
From accommodation to entertainment, Liverpool is
bursting at the seams. First-time visitors may wish to
check out the city’s most famous attractions, which
are no less enthralling for all their popularity. From
touring Liverpool FC’s famous Anfield Stadium
to discovering millions of years of earth’s history
crammed into the World Museum, there’s a lot going
on. Hop aboard a German U-boat at Birkenhead or
blast off into the furthest reaches of the galaxy, so to
speak, at Spaceport.

maritime museums, football stadiums and restaurants –
