GOSFORTH GOLF COURSE
Hidden away in the leafy suburbs of Newcastle lies
Gosforth Golf Club. The club is often described
as being one of the region’s hidden gems, and its
members, who are proud of the well maintained and
challenging course, would certainly concur. Since
opening in 1906, the course has seen a number of
layout changes, and its green keepers are regularly
commended for the excellent course conditions all
year round. The course is popular with golfers of all
abilities, attracting both local community members
and golfers who travel to Newcastle to take
advantage of the course and its facilities. While
most people come as guests of existing Gosforth
members or within a society, visitors without a
sponsor are more than welcome to play and enjoy
the facilities, subject to the usual formalities. The
combination of high quality parkland golf and good
food and drink promises a memorable visit. The
course itself is fairly flat and relatively easy to walk
but is blessed with immense character. The 90-acre
site is both tranquil and scenic with plenty of local
wildlife regularly calling in to inspect the course.
The Ouse Burn is a major feature of Gosforth Golf
Course, running the length of the course, winding
its way down the 18th and through the 4th on its
way to the Tyne. Avoiding this can be a test for even
the most experienced of golfers. The signature hole
is undoubtedly the 18th; at 432 yards from the
medal tee, it has been dubbed one of the toughest
finishing holes in the region. When you’ve tired of
knocking a ball about, you can retreat to the comfort
of the clubhouse, whose well-lit lounge boasts
splendid views of the course and surrounding
environs. The verdant parkland course at Gosforth
Golf Club forms the perfect setting in which to enjoy
an unhurried round.
