It’s no stretch to say that the
Royal Liverpool Golf Club is
among the country’s most
prestigious links courses.
Built in 1869, on the former
racecourse of the Liverpool
Hunt Club, the club first gained
royal status just two years
later and has never looked
back. The venue for twelve
Open Championships, the
most recent of which saw
Rory McIlroy lift the trophy in
2014, Hoylake is a beloved
staple of the golfing calendar.
The club’s illustrious history,
fast greens and majestic
clubhouse combine to make
playing here a joy, whether
you’re a seasoned pro or keen
amateur. Having welcomed
some of the finest practitioners
of the game through the ages, it
gives keen visitors the chance
to walk in the footsteps of
giants, and experience what
Tiger Woods – who won here
in 2006 – described as ‘golf
as it was meant to be played’.
Known for the harsh winds
which swirl around the course,
as well as the unusually flat
greens, the course can cause
even the most skilled golfers to
lose their composure. Recently
designated as the venue for
2019’s Walker Cup, when the
club will celebrate its 150th
year, Royal Liverpool Golf Club
shows no signs of letting up.
