Byzantium is a sumptuous tapas
restaurant in the Kings Heath
area of Birmingham. While
there are many flavoursome
Spanish dishes on the menu,
the eatery branches beyond
the tapas stereotype and
takes culinary inspiration from
throughout the Mediterranean.
Elegantly
furnished
with
ornate lamps, religious artwork
(portraits of Madonna gaze
serenely down at diners
from the walls) and church
pew seating, the restaurant
creates an impression from
the moment visitors cross the
threshold. Wait to be seated
then soak up the ambience
while nibbling on a bowl of
complimentary olives. There’s
a dish to satisfy everyone on
this well-crafted menu, from
exotic nibbles like zaalouk,
an aubergine and tomato dip
spiced with coriander and
cumin, to gorgeous flatbreads
topped with oil, herbs and
chillies. Especially popular
with regulars is the chicken
souvlaki, skewers of tender
chargrilled chicken served with
Mediterranean vegetables and
delicious tzatziki. Byzantium
places a strong focus on
the commingling of flavours
and textures; there’s very
much a mix-and-match feel
to the menu. The dishes are
