The womenswear that forms Thunder Egg’s stock
in trade encompasses styles from the ‘50s to the
present day. Frocks and 1940s-style tea dresses
compete for shelf space alongside contemporary
garb from the likes of Glamorous, Sugarhill Boutique
and Lazy Oaf. With a wide range of gifts, jewellery,
bags and homewares also to be found under its roof,

Afflecks is a historic indoor market that occupies
pride of place in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. A
drapery business named Affleck & Brown originally
operated in this part of town 150 years ago, before
Affleck’s Palace sprung up in 1981 as a mecca
for independent retailers looking for a base from
which to sell their wares. Today Afflecks, as it’s
simply known, forms a labyrinthine market that
celebrates the alternative, the left field and the
avant garde. From top hats to tattoos and art to
guitars, Afflecks is a wonderland for purveyors of
the unusual. Indulge your sweet tooth at Fudge
Ape, check out the vintage jackets at Milner &
Webb, pick up some vinyl at Dub Merchant and
admire the bespoke jewellery at Hannah Makes
Things. Open till 6pm Monday to Saturday and till
5pm on Sundays, Afflecks is awash with all things
bohemian, retro and quirky.
