Oxford-2020-2021 - page 4

ondon might serenade the shoppers and Edinburgh the castle crowds, but for many
UK visitors there’s one city that trumps them all. One city whose architecture,
culture, education and literary heritage is unsurpassed. It’s affectionately known as
The City of Dreaming Spires and its home is in the county of Oxfordshire. Oxford
has inspired, entranced and beguiled visitors from far and near for centuries, lured
to the seat of learning and scientific discovery that spawned such luminaries as Oscar Wilde,
J.R.R. Tolkien, C S Lewis and Lewis Carroll. Visit Oxford today and in addition to immersing
yourself in a storied history spanning hundreds of years, there’s the prospect of exploring one of
the most picturesque counties in all of England. With dozens of exquisite parks, woodlands and
gardens, Oxford is an urban city wrapped in a bucolic vista.
There’s more to Oxford than iconic university edifices and blissful parkland of course – much
more. This is a city that dates back to Saxon times and which, in more recent times, has served
as a backdrop for pivotal scenes from the Harry Potter movies including the Bodleian Library,
which doubled as its Hogwarts counterpart. While you’re touring Oxford’s finest attractions,
don’t neglect a visit to the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archeology either. First opened to
the public in 1683, it holds a collection of artifacts rivalled only by those to be found at the city’s
fascinating Pitt Rivers Museum. If you’re planning a trip to The City of Dreaming Spires for
the first time – be it for business or leisure – there are a few other attractions that must surely
be ticked off your bucket list. No maiden visit to Oxford would be complete without taking a
trip on a punt – a traditional flat-bottomed boat – along the river. Oxford’s
boating history requires little by way of introduction; even the most
casual of tourists will be familiar with the boat race with which
the city is synonymous.
If you know where to look, Oxford offers a wealth
of enticing options, from accommodation to
entertainment. Without that all-important local
knowledge, however, discovering the verdant city’s
best bars, freshest seafood restaurants, greatest family
attractions and chirpiest cafes comes down to pot
luck. The Entertainment Guide believes that no
holiday or business trip should be dependant upon
sheer serendipity. Your time is too valuable to be
spent on run-of-the-mill attractions and forgettable
eateries. Thankfully, there’s a better way.
As you explore Oxford – its jazz clubs, art galleries,
football stadium and acclaimed brasseries – keep The
Entertainment Guide close at hand on your tablet or
smartphone. From exceptional activity
