Fudge Kitchen first started making fudge in the
UK as Jim Garrahy’s Fudge Kitchen back in 1983.
The story of the sugary treat’s origins goes back
way further of course. Fudge originates not from
Devon or Cornwall, as many people imagine, but
was in fact born at a female college in Vasser,
USA. A college lecturer was taking a class in toffee
making when the temperature of the concoction
was not taken high enough. The end product
was called fudge, which is why the term ‘fudge’
is used to indicate a mistake or error. Today, the
US remains one of the fudge-making centres of
the world – for example tiny Mackinac Island off
the coast of Michigan has over fourteen fudge
shops in just two streets, many dating back to the
19th century – and Fudge Kitchen’s products are
inspired by this heritage. Its recipe dates back
to 1830, and it still makes it fudge by hand on
marble slabs. The brand’s American-style slab
fudge is made using whipping cream instead of
butter, giving a creamy soft texture and distinctive
flavour. All of its fudge is freshly made and sold at
shops across the UK including its Oxford outlet on
Broad Street. Visit the shop and you can try a free
sample and catch one of the unique fudge making
demonstrations. If you can’t make it to the shop,
fear not – you can buy Fudge Kitchen’s products
online and from selected stockists across the UK.
The Oxford store stocks limited edition flavours
that can be frozen and will keep as long as you
can resist the urge to grate your frozen fudge
into your ice cream sundae. Try one of Fudge
Kitchen’s most ingenious inventions, liquid fudge,
a smooth fudgey take on traditional hot chocolate.
