Western Approaches Museum is Liverpool’s
war museum. Stashed inside its bunkers and
subterranean rooms is the story of how the British
Armed Forces engineered an Allied victory. It was
here that they fomented plans to shore up the
Western Approaches and fend off the German
onslaught. Formerly top secret documents lay bare
the plotting and planning that was part of a concerted
war effort. Many of the original tools and furnishings
that were once operational within the army outpost
have been preserved, including a phone which had
a direct line to the war cabinet in London. You’ll
visit the Map Room, the nerve centre from which
the Battle of the Atlantic was orchestrated, and, as
you cast your eyes over the maps annotated with
shipping routes and convoy lines, you’ll find yourself
transported back in time to the 1940s when the world
was at war and the enemy could be anywhere.

YELLOW SUB ON THE DOCKS
Liverpool’s Premier Play Centre
Liverpool loves the Beatles, as anyone who spends
a weekend in the city will discover. Everywhere
you roam, you’ll encounter tributes to the ‘60s
stars, from the lavish to the quirky. Yellow Sub falls
into the latter category, the family entertainment
centre paying tribute to the Beatles’ iconic yellow
submarine, the subject of a famous psychedelic
film to accompany the equally famous song. Most
kids are unfamiliar with the Beatles, but after a day
spent exploring Yellow Sub, they’ll have developed a
newfound affinity for the original and best boyband.
Watch as they get to grips with the play frames, hit
up the arcades, show off their skills on the football
pitch and immerse themselves in the new sensory
area. Situated by the city’s Albert Docks, Yellow
Sub allows children to run wild in a safe, supervised
environment, while parents watch from the sidelines
or get involved if they can muster the energy.
