ST JOHNS BEACON
St John’s Beacon (known
to locals as ‘Radio City
Tower’) is hard to miss.
The startling radio and
observation tower looms over
the city of Liverpool, its main
column swelling at its apex
to accommodate a glass
viewing tower. The views
from the top are as majestic
as you might expect. The
138-metre high tower, which
opened in 1969, enjoyed
a £5 million refurbishment
at the dawn of the 21st
century. In keeping with its
nomenclature, St John’s
Beacon, is home to Radio
City, Radio City 2, Radio City
3 and Radio City Talk. The
tower is open for tours daily
from 10:30am, with a colour
souvenir booklet included
in the ticket price. With no
time limit, you’re welcome to
linger as long as you like at
the top while you savour the
exquisite view and snap a
few photos. Your reward for
making it to the observation
tower will be a breathtaking
vista of Merseyside, the
Wirral and North Wales.
On clement days, you should
even be able to make out
the Cumbrian Hills. You
haven’t seen Liverpool until
you’ve taken the St John’s
Beacon Tour.
