CARRICKFERGUS
CASTLE
A visit to the borough of
Carrickfergus is a must when
holidaying in Belfast. This
handsome area of East Antrim
fuses history with a diverse
natural landscape to keep
sightseers snapping happily for
days. Located on the shores of
Belfast Lough, Carrickfergus
is anchored by its famous
eponymous castle, which was
built in the 12th century. The
country’s oldest – not to mention
best preserved – Norman
citadel, it today houses a variety
of historical displays, in addition
to several 17th and 18th-century
cannons. It also imparts a
splendid view over the water.
Elsewhere in Carrickfergus,
major attractions include the
Andrew
Jackson
Cottage
and US Rangers Museum,
both of which are located in
Boneybefore. Should you wish
to learn more about the local
area, the Carrickfergus Museum
and Civic Centre is the place
to go: not only is there a well-
presented history exhibition, but
there’s a marvellous collection
of artefacts and paintings and
a great little coffee shop too.
Lastly, no visit to Carrickfergus
is complete without a visit to
Knockagh Monument, the
obelisk which towers high over
the region. The views from the
top are simply magnificent.
