THE COAL SHED
Heralded as one of the UK’s
best restaurants by the
Observer Food Monthly, The
Coal Shed delivers innovative
dishes cooked with flair
and passion. The Brighton
eatery’s concept is surprisingly
simple – grilled meat and
fish cooked and seasoned to
perfection – but the results are
often spectacular. Succulent
coconut-flavoured
curried
monkfish and 35-day dry-aged
Scottish steak are among
the prime options, the latter
bearing all the hallmarks of
the real charcoal grill in which
it was cooked. Those craving
the carte blanche seaside
experience, meanwhile, can
sample seared scallops with
truffle and hazelnut butter, or
Irish rock oysters, which are
served on a bed of crushed
ice with lemon wedges and
tabasco. Vegetarians aren’t
excluded, even if the menu
leans towards those of the surf
‘n’ turf disposition – perhaps
the arancini is the best of the
rest, and there are plenty of
tasty sides to choose from.
The restaurant itself is rather
rustic in appearance, with
clean wooden furnishings
and exposed masonry, while
hanging light-bulbs and leather
banquettes provide an air of
sophistication.
