Madame Fromage has two locations in the centre
of Cardiff, one at 18 Castle Arcade and the other
at 21 Castle Street. In each of the restaurants
you can sit and enjoy cheese platters and real
homemade food prepared in front of you coupled
with the best of traditional Welsh and Breton
cuisine. This is slow food at its best. The Castle
Street restaurant can accommodate 35 people
inside and has an additional 12 seats outside
where you can experience the atmosphere of
typical Celtic cafe culture all year round. Madame
Fromage’s friendly staff have a sense of humour
and more importantly they know their cheeses. If
you’re looking for fast food or are in a hurry, you’ll
have come to the wrong place. If you’ve time to
linger though, Madame Fromage is a leisurely
treat. All of the food is cooked and prepared in
front of you so that you can actually see that it’s
real food that hasn’t been bought in from a catering
supplier. Pop in for lunch on a weekend and – if
you can find a table – sip on a Fentiman’s Curiosity
Cola and read the Saturday papers while you wait
for your food to be prepared. Gourmands should
try the Madame Fromage gourmet cheese platter;
it’s meant to serve one but you’ll be doing well
to finish it. Cheeses include Caerphilly, Colston
Basset stilton, brie, cheddar, gorgonzola and an
intriguing chilli cheese. Other highlights include
a selection of bread including a light rye and an
olive bread; meats including chorizo and parma
ham; some flavoursome marinated olives and an
excellent artichoke heart. With a daily portfolio of
over 150 different cheese varieties sourced from
artisan and award-winning seasonal farmhouse
producers and a comprehensive delicatessen
and patisserie range, Madame Fromage is one of
the best specialist cheese shops and restaurants
in the country.
