The Castle, Carlisle
Cumbria, CA3 8UR
Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life is located right
in the heart of Carlisle within the grounds of historic
Carlisle Castle. As one of Carlisle’s newer visitor
attractions, it is rapidly gaining popularity with
tourists and locals, as it tells the 300 year story of
Cumbria’s County Infantry Regiment and the history
of its soldiers past and present. Militalia has always
fascinated people, and this museum offers a brilliant
insight into military history. The museum has moved
to larger premises in 2014, into the Outer Ward of
Carlisle Castle. This has meant a bigger space and
better access which is great news for visitors newand
old. The increased exhibition space has now allowed
vehicles to be displayed, in addition to an already
impressive range of uniforms, medals, weapons and
silver. Kids will be kept entertained by interactive
displays and dioramas. Make sure you don’t miss
the enthralling First World War art exhibition, as
well as the interactive trail (aimed at young people
but interesting for all ages). The museum boasts
impressive links with current Cumbria regiments
and the local community, encouraging input and
sharing stories of outstanding loyalty, courage and
service. In addition, they offer help and information
to those looking to trace or research a soldier who
served in any of the Cumbria Regiments. Dealing
with hundreds of enquiries a year, the museum
can provide copies of medal index cards, service
records, regimental histories and even sometimes
War Diaries. Their knowledgeable research
assistants are always happy to help and can advise
on documents available and even on making sense
of the more obscure items. Add to this a tiny but well
stocked shop, including a range of world war related
publications, reproduction newspapers, collectibles
and souvenirs, plus a cafe with pretty decent coffee
for a museum, and you’ll get lost in here for hours.
