BIG SCREEN ENTERTAINMENT
Vue Cinema in Carlisle is one of the larger
cinemas in the city and with seven screens
can offer a good variety of new release films.
It’s set in a modern building right in the heart of
the city centre, so very easy to get to by bus or
train. The downside to the location is a lack of
parking, very limited spaces and not much street
parking nearby. The decoration is understated,
but it’s not as if movie-goers will be giving it
much attention in any case once the lights dim.
The seats are comfy - which is what you really
need after all - and there’s even the option to
upgrade to VIP seating. Super plush! There’s
the usual variety of yummy cinema snacks and
Vue staff are generally friendly and helpful.
Overall, Carlisle’s Vue forms a comfortable spot
in which to watch the latest blockbusters.
EDEN BRIDGE GARDENS

Eden Bridge Gardens
Eden Bridge Gardens are beautiful ornamental
gardens situated on the north bank of the River
Eden, just off Eden Bridge, and designed by
internationally renowned landscape architects,
Thoma H Mawson & Sons. Locally these
gardens are commonly referred as the Chinese
Gardens, though it’s unclear why as the design
isn’t particularly Chinese and Mawson was more
famed for his Italian style. Pretty pergolas, planted
borders and lily ponds provide a peaceful escape
from busy city life, while numerous seating places
offer the chance for quiet contemplation looking
out over the river. At one point the gardens had
fallen into some disrepair, which was a shame
considering their historical significance as
possibly one of the last projects Thomas Mawson
worked on before his death in 1933. Fortunately
restoration work was carried out and Eden Bridge
Gardens can now be viewed in all their glory.
