CLAYPOTTS CASTLE

Claypotts Castle
While Scotland certainly isn’t short of 16th century
castles, Claypotts Castle has a charm and an
air of mystery all of its own. Not only is it intact,
which is in itself a rarity, but the tales that have
accompanied this distinctive little castle through
the centuries are as memorable as the edifice
itself. Built by John Strachan in the late 1500s,
the castle’s legends include having once homed
a brownie – a mythical household spirit prone to
helping out with the chores. Claypotts Castle’s
allegedly left after getting upset by the workload
of a lazy kitchen maid. Visit the castle today and
you can inspect the tower house that’s scarcely
changed from its earliest days. Having been
inhabited for almost 500 years, the castle, which is
free to visit, remains as scintillating today as when
it was first constructed. Pay it a visit and prepare
to fall in love.
