St Andrews Castle
This historic ruin lies in a picturesque setting
overlooking the water by Castle Sands. The
450-year-old castle dates back to medieval times
and has been a fortress, prison and a bishop and
archbishops’ palace during its long and colourful
life. Now tourists can explore the fascinating site,
including secret passages, a dungeon, a unique
underground mine and a countermine. Learn
more about the people, stories and events that
took place here at the visitor centre, 50 metres
from the castle itself. Kids will particularly enjoy
discovering these pieces of Scottish history as
they’re brought to life through dioramas and
audio visual presentations. Parking, toilets and
a gift shop are available on site and the site is
open throughout the year (with the exception of
Christmas and New Year), subject to weather
conditions. St Andrews Castle also hosts seasonal
events, mainly during the school holidays.
