Arbroath Abbey
A seminal building in Scottish history, Arbroath
Abbey is where the nation swore its independence
from English rule in 1320. The Declaration of
Arbroath, delivered to the Pope, contained the
immortal line “For, as long as but a hundred of
us remain alive, never will we on any conditions
be brought under English rule.” The abbey was
founded by William the Lion in 1178 and played
a pivotal role in Scots history for the next 400
years. Visit the ruined abbey today and you can
still sense the grandeur of the place and get a
feel for the historic events that took place within
its walls. Major features include the Round O, a
large circular window whose light was used to
guide mariners safely home. The Stone of Destiny
is intertwined with Arbroath Abbey, and you’ll
discover more about its storied past during a day
trip to this iconic monument.
