Grainbank, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1RD
Just on the outskirts of Kirkwall and offering a
gorgeous view of the Northern Isles lies Orkney
Golf Club, a club with a rich and inspiring
history. It boasts the longest course on the
Orkney Islands at 5,575 yards. Orkney offers
not only a traditional 18-hole course, but also a
putting green and indoor practice net facilities.
The modern clubhouse provides changing and
locker facilities for men and women, and the bar
sells a range of alcoholic beverages as well as
tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks to warm up
after a day on the range. Visitors are invited to
take part no matter their ability, and no booking
is necessary unless a big group plans to attend.
There is also a selection of clubs and trolleys for
hire. Because Orkney Golf Club is a nonprofit
organisation, visitors and locals are asked to pay
using the honesty box at the clubhouse, as these
fees help to maintain the course. Membership is
also available both to adults and to junior players,
and there is a number of competitions taking place
throughout the season. The Open Competitions
give anyone a chance to come in and show off
their skills. Members also have the opportunity to
use the clubhouse for private events. Dating all
the way back to 1889, this golf club is just one of
many in the region but one of the most accessible
for players just starting out or those looking to go
pro. With numerous opportunities to practice, the
club is welcoming to all and the course is lovingly
maintained and constantly improved. A visit to
Orkney Golf Club is a great way to experience
the Northern Isles golf tradition in a remote and
splendid location.
