Whalsay Leisure centre offers facilities for anyone
from pre-school children to seniors in a variety
of disciplines. The centre, over twenty years old,
provides a squash court, 15-metre swimming
pool, and fitness centre equipped with the latest
machines. For parents and onlookers, a viewing
gallery with seating, coffee, tea and even a pool
table is the perfect place to spend time. Meeting
rooms can be hired for business events, and an
outdoor all-weather field complete with floodlights
is available for team sports players. Even if you
don’t know where to begin, plenty of courses,
clubs, and holiday programs offer instruction. Pool
and inflatable birthday parties are sure to be a big

free, and the leisure pass which is provided
makes booking a snap. The pass can be used at
any other Shetland Recreational Trust facility.

Kirkwall, the Wellpark Garden Centre is open
seven days a week and is an established, family-
owned operation. Aside from a full range of
products, the staff are happy to give their expert
gardening advice to anyone coming in with
questions about plant care. Besides houseplants,
outdoor shrubs, seeds, and pet goods, customers
can also purchase patio furniture, barbecues, gifts
and homewares. If you start to get peckish, the
Willows Coffee Shop happens to be under the
same roof as the garden centre. The cafe offers
hot drinks, salads, wraps and a variety of baked
goods, and there’s also a professional florist
centre for those seeking thoughtful gift bouquets
for all occasions. The entire facility is accessible
for the disabled and is a great place to start for
