Manchester-2020-2021 - page 6

anchester is a classic case of a city that’s reinvented itself. Once a northern
industrial stronghold, it now serves as a cosmopolitan northern playground
that’s prized for its memorable nightlife, including some of the best pubs in
the country. There’s also a thriving live music scene in the city that spawned
some of the 90s’ most memorable guitar bands.
From its club scene to its culinary scene and from its sports stadia to its rejuvenated quays,
Manchester is alive. There’s a restless energy that permeates every inch of the city; you can
sense it as you follow its busy waterways, and you can feel it as you walk down Sir Matt
Busby Way on matchdays. When night falls, that energy becomes positively electric as the
nightclubs crackle into life and the city’s professionals prepare to let their hair down. No one
parties quite like the denizens of Madchester, as the 90s rave scene was affectionately known.
Liverpool may have had the Beatles, but Manchester can claim New Order, Joy Division, The
Smiths, Oasis, Stone Roses and many more.
With those hedonistic Hacienda days gone, the city has moved on whilst remaining true to
the spirit that fuelled those legendary club nights. There are still plenty of clubs to placate
the indie kids, while the likes of Gorilla and Joshua Brooks cater for those who just wanna
dance till they drop. If your clubbing days are behind you, fear not: there are plenty of
more sedate ways to while away an evening. There’s a lot of history locked
away in the city where scientists first split the atom and engineered
the stored-program computer. Check out the state-of-the-art
exhibitions at the Museum of Science & Industry, which
combines tomorrow’s tech with groundbreaking projects
of yesteryear.
When it comes to dining, Manchester is no slouch
either. You’ll find arguably the best jalfrezi in Britain
at Rusholme Curry Mile, while the Northern
Quarter is crammed with bijou cafes that do a
cracking cuppa. Prefer something a little stronger?
With over 30 breweries to investigate, including
Allgates and vegan microbrewery Marble Beers,
there are a lot of reasons to be happy.
For culture buffs, Manchester certainly crams a lot
in. A good starting point is the John Rylands Library,
one of the city’s most formidable buildings. The imposing
Victorian Gothic architecture is a treat to behold, while the
magnificence of the reading room is simply breathtaking.
