If you’re looking for a fun family day out, Margam
Country Park certainly fits the bill. Set in 1,000
acres of parkland, the park offers a diverse range
of challenging activities. Spend your morning
completing a history quest in the 12th century
chapter house, 18th century orangery and the
eerie Margam Castle. The afternoon could be a
chance to relax in the ornamental gardens or to
take a walk or cycle on one of the secret trails.
Steeped in history, wildlife and natural beauty,
there’s something for everyone at Margam Park.
Throughout the year, the park hosts various
events, from Living History Weekends to Clown
Festivals and charity walks. The country park
estate, encompassing some 850 acres, is situated
in Margam, about two miles from Port Talbot.
It was once owned by the Mansel Talbot family
and is now owned and administered by the local
council. Situated within the park are three notable
buildings: Margam Abbey, a Cistercian monastery;
Margam Castle, a neo-Gothic country house that
was once the seat of the Mansel Talbot family; and
the 18th century orangery. Margam Park owes its
location and beginnings to the monastery, which
was acquired by Sir Rice Mansel in 1540 after the
Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537. A Tudor
mansion was later built on the site of the former
monastic ranges by Sir Rice Mansel as a county
residence. The narrow gauge Margam Park Train
conducts visitors around the grounds in the summer
and the orangery has a licence for civil marriages.
Events on the estate are held through the summer
including everything from fairs selling goods to car
rallies. With six Scheduled Ancient Monuments,
including two Iron Age hill forts, there’s a wealth
of things to see and do at Margam Country Park.
