CLYNE GARDENS
CLYNE GARDENS
Clyne Gardens is a botanical
garden that was formed from
the
landscaped
gardens
created by Glynn Vivian of the
Vivian family. He purchased
the castle in 1860 and lavished
time and money on it to reflect
his wealth. Thereafter, the
estate passed to his nephew
Algernon, ‘TheAdmiral’ in 1921
who owned it until his death in
1952 and had a great influence
on the gardens as they are
today. The Admiral received
many famous visitors at the
Castle including the Prince of
Wales (later King Edward VIII),
Neville Chamberlain, Stanley
Baldwin and Adelina Patti.
The botanical gardens contain
varied national collections of
plants set in beautiful parkland
including
rhododendrons,
pieris and enkianthus. The
lush gardens offer a haven
of tranquility, complete with
many interesting features.
Outstanding features include
a bog garden, bluebell wood,
gazebo, Japanese bridge,
heather beds, Italian bridge,
wildflower
meadow
and
azalea gardens. The tallest
recorded magnolia in Britain
can be found here along
with oak woodland that is
a remnant of Clyne Forest,
an important 11th Century
Norman landmark. Pay a visit
and prepare to be enchanted.
