This cliff-top links course, founded in 1908 on the
dramatic landscape of the Gower Peninsula, boasts
arresting views across to Pennard’s beautiful sandy
beaches. Parts of the course are well above sea
level on this James Braid-designed links of quality,
where golfers share the 6,329 yards with ponies and
cattle. The ruins of a 12th century Norman castle
stand guard over the par-four seventh, with the
drive across a deep chasm from a high tee followed
by a semi-blind approach shot to a sunken green
guarded by dunes. It’s a stern, hilly challenge with
blind shots, awkward lies and climbs, but a course
of rare class. Pennard is a classic rugged links
course situated 200 feet above sea level leading to
it being known as The Links in the Sky. It is blessed
with free draining ground, which remains playable
all year round with tight lies, running fairways and
firm fast greens. Along with the unique golf course,
there are fantastic views of the famous Three Cliffs
Bay over to Oxwich Bay. If your golfing starts to
flag, glance up at the enchanting view which should
restore your confidence and steel you for what lies
ahead. The front nine is a classic mix of strong
par threes and fours, with a solitary par five. This
warms you up for the challenge on the spectacular
back nine. From hole 10, the course and views
just get better as the topography gets more severe
and challenging, moving out towards the Three
Cliffs Bay over to Oxwich Bay. Stop for a moment
and take in the view from green 16. You won’t be
disappointed. Pennard is fortunate to have a bar
and restaurant in a wonderful setting; the restaurant
is available to anyone via a dining club membership
which gives lifetime membership at no cost.
